Even though our doors are closed the education team are still working

away behind the scenes in Lisburn Museum.

Recently we have been taking the opportunity to catch up with some routine

maintenance of the equipment used in the galleries for demonstrations and workshops.

The spinning wheels we work on are wooden and need to be regularly checked.

Wood can be affected by humidity, temperatures, how often it is worked with and even the seasons.

This wheel has been completely stripped down and treated with a coat of linseed oil.  Its saddle is being mended and once that is done it will be reassembled and have new drive bands put in place.

While workshops in-person can’t happen right now we are looking to the future when we will

be able to welcome groups back to Lisburn Museum.

Inkle loom weaving is a popular workshop that we offer through our education programme.

It teaches the basics of weaving together warp and weft threads.

These looms have been prepped with colourful warp threads

and are waiting to be worked on.
