“Through these pale cold days.”

An artistic response to the Holocaust by Leslie Nicholl.

“When we visited Auschwitz and Birkenau during a bitterly cold February 1997, I came across the photograph of this young woman.  What struck me as, she looked into the camera, was the expression in her eyes; a disturbing mixture of dignity and fear.  Her vulnerability, for me, lay in the fact that the button for the top buttonhole on her jacket was only partially closed and a safety pin held the second buttonhole secure.  How frightening to think how valuable something like a safety pin was in such circumstances.

Her face has haunted me all these years.

I hope she survived.
