Lisburn’s Quaker School: 250 Years of Friends’
It is 250 years since a Quaker school was established on Lisburn’s Prospect Hill. Although a very different place from what it was back in 1774, the first headmaster and his scholars would no doubt find some things familiar at Friends’ School.
The museum’s new exhibition considers the early history of the Religious Society of Friends or Quakers in Ireland, many of whom were innovators in the local linen industry. Come and find out about their role in the development of Friends’ School, Lisburn.
We explore life and the many changes at Prospect Hill over the last 250 years. There were distinct aspects of the curriculum, such as study of the natural world. Notable past pupils, such as Ian McElhinney (better known as ‘Granda Joe’ from TV’s Derry Girls), are also featured in the exhibition.
A variety of objects are on display from the museum’s collection, the school’s archive, and National Museums NI. There’ll be something you can relate to from your time at school, even if you did not go to Friends’.
