About the exhibition

We are delighted to host ‘In Their Own Words’ on behalf of the LGBTQIA+ Heritage Project. The exhibition focuses on activists and members of the LGBTQIA+ community that the Heritage Project chose to highlight. You can see lots of interesting objects, such as badges, flags, quilts, and the Cara-Friend telephone that was a lifeline for many LGBTQIA+ people at the height of ‘The Troubles’ in Northern Ireland. While browsing the display, visitors can scan QR codes which will direct them to a sound clip or collection of clips from the Heritage Project.

About the LGBTQIA+ Heritage Project

The LGBTQIA+ Heritage Project is led by HERe NI in partnership with The Rainbow Project and Cara-Friend. These organisations, all based in Northern Ireland, support many LGBTQIA+ people who all have a story to tell. The project has several objectives, such as developing an oral history archive in the form of podcasts to uncover forgotten stories, creating and maintaining an online archive of local LGBTQIA+ history, and delivering a history course for young people, schools, communities, and voluntary organisations. Find out more about the project.
