Sporty-Science Workshop: Strongman Static Challenge

Sporty-Science Workshop: Strongman Static Challenge

Tests of Strength: a brief history!

Lifting weights and tests of strength have a long history.  In many prehistoric tribes the traditional test of manhood was lifting a special, and very heavy, rock!

These stones, some with the name of the first person to lift them carved into their surface, can be found in in Greece and Scotland.  At Old Dailly in South Ayrshire are the Charter Stones that were used for trials of strength.

The Test-of-Strength Challenge!

Our challenge today involves testing STATIC ELECTRICITY to see how strong it is.

Static electricity is an imbalance of electric charges within or on the surface of a material. The charge remains until it is able to move away by means of an electric current or electrical discharge.

Static electricity is a theme explored in one of the Museum’s many workshops.  Get in touch for more info or you would like to book.
