Bachelors Walk, Lisburn, 1980s (ILC&LM Collection)
This was outside a shop called Motor and Sport, which offered a savings and discounts service as part of an ‘Xmas Club’ in the lead-up to Christmas. Bicycles were particularly popular.
Several Lisburn businesses had Christmas Clubs around this time. The Ulster Star of 19 September 1980 noted the benefits of such schemes: ‘Joining a Christmas Club is one way of ordering exactly what you want, and paying for it out of the housekeeping money whenever there are a few pounds to spare.’
Did you own a bicycle from Motor and Sport? Has Bachelors Walk changed much over the years?
