Traditional Industry Worksheet: Binary
Binary is a way to store and read information using with only two options. A binary system is the principle behind the Jacquard loom, which revolutionised (slowly) how damask was woven on hand looms. You can learn more about weaving and the first computers in our post HERE.
The Museum keeps the tradition of hand loom weaving alive in our Weaving Workshop, and our weavers work both plain and damask designs using the principle of binary.
Download our BINARY worksheet below to create a message on a punch card – similar to those used in our weaving workshop – and a cutout-and-keep bracelet.
