Mary and Tom Kennedy were from Lisburn and children of Joseph Kennedy, a former editor of the Lisburn Standard. In this photo, they are walking through the streets of Dublin in August 1944 with their dog, ‘Shandy’. They had attended Monkstown Dog Show at Monkstown, near Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, where Shandy won four firsts and a ‘Green Star’ – a certificate won at Championship Shows held under the rules of the Irish Kennel Club.

The Second World War was still being fought at this time, but southern Ireland was a neutral country. A trip to Dublin was no doubt a welcome break for the Kennedys and their ‘prized pooch’ from the black outs, rationing, and restrictions in wartime Lisburn.
