Label, Stewart’s golf thread, c.1925 (LMILC.2025.317, gift)
Back when golfers used clubs with a wooden shaft, waxed linen thread was widely used for ‘whipping’. This process strengthened and improved the appearance of the clubs.
Lisburn firms like Robert Stewart & Sons Ltd (where Bow Street Mall now stands) were one of the most popular suppliers of golf or whipping thread. This was a label used to advertise their products.
With advances in golf club design, particularly the introduction of steel shafts in the late 1920s and 1930s, the demand for whipping thread declined.
