Object: Irene MacWilliam’s amazing Irish Linen Wall Hanging

Irene McWilliam is one of the foremost quilters and embroiders.  She was awarded a BEM for services to textile art in 2019, and has won numerous awards for her work.   In 2021 she won RSPB NI’s artist of the year!    Irene has exhibited her work in Lisburn museum, the Linen Hall Library, and galleries in Croatia, Germany, Japan, Wales, France, USA, South Africa, Canada plus a host of other galleries across the globe.  Her work is held in collections at National Museums NI, Ulster University, and Down County Museum.

This piece hangs in our Flax to Fabric exhibition, and features pieces of Irish linen patchwork, applique and free machining techniques with symbols of the Irish linen industry.  Have you see it in our Activities Gallery?
