Our events are free and in person, and take place in the museum’s historic Assembly Room on Saturday afternoons. Tea and coffee will be served from 1:45pm, and talks start promptly at 2pm. Saturday 5 September 2026 @ 2pm – ‘Basket Making’, by Clive Lyttle from Welig Heritage Crafts
Step into the woven world of Irish basketmaking with this fascinating talk. Through a unique display of traditional baskets, heritage tools, and natural materials, Clive will give you insight into the stories, skills, and traditions of basketmaking in Ireland that he has learned from nearly 30 years of experience. A live demonstration will bring the craft to life, showing how baskets are created by hand, with plenty of opportunities for questions and conversation along the way.
Saturday 3 October 2026 @ 2pm – ‘Shadows of Light: Victorian photography archives in PRONI’, by Brett Irwin
Explore the Victorian photographic collections of Northern Ireland’s official national archives – PRONI – and discover how nineteenth-century images captured family life, identity, landscapes, and social change. Brett, a curatorial officer at PRONI, examines professional and amateur photographers to reveal how photography shaped memory, documented communities, and offers a vivid window into Victorian values, aspirations, and everyday experience.
Saturday 7 November 2026 @ 2pm – ‘The life and journey of Hugh McCartney’, by Clive Anderson
Retired Principal Clive Anderson explores the life and journey of Hugh McCartney, a county Down farm boy who enlisted in Lisburn into the heavy calvary regiment of the Inniskilling Dragoons. The talk traces Hugh’s journey right into the thick of Waterloo – one of history’s most famous battles – in which he won a medal that has now found its way home.
Saturday 5 December 2026 @ 2pm – ‘Culture Club Café & Christmas Crafts’
Get into the festive spirit with a relaxed Christmas crafts session at Culture Club Café. Enjoy making homemade wrapping paper, gift tags, Christmas cards, and a range of seasonal decorations, including felt birds, baubles, beaded hearts, mini holly wreaths, and twigs-and-ribbon ornaments. A warm, creative session with refreshments provided, perfect for enjoying some Christmas cheer and taking home handmade decorations.
