Jimmy McIlroy
The footballer Jimmy McIlroy lived at Ballyskeagh.
At 14 he was playing for Lisburn Technical College when he was spotted and asked to play for Craigavad F.C., and later Glentoran F.C..
He moved to England to play for Burnley F.C., then Stoke City. He played international football for Northern Ireland.
Burnley F.C. eventually named a part of their stadium ‘The Jimmy M’Ilroy Stand’.
Samuel Lockhart
Samuel Lockhart was a boxer who won Four Ulster Juvenile
titles;
- 1959 Ulster Juvenile Champion
- 1960 Ulster Juvenile Champion
- 1961 Ulster Juvenile Champion
- 1963 Ulster & All Ireland Youth Bantam weight Champion title in Dublin.
He also achieved three Ulster Senior titles
- 1965 Ulster Senior Featherweight Champion
- 1966 Ulster Senior Featherweight Champion
- 1967 Ulster Senior Featherweight Champion
He went professional in 1967 when he won a Lightweight title, two Featherweight titles, the All-Ireland Bantam title and the Ulster Professional Lightweight title in 1971 before giving up in 1973.
